These are the focus group questions (Appendix 1) and the survey questions (Appendix 2) used to collect data from a language and linguistics-specific implementation of the model at Newcastle University, UK.
The questions are listed below; you can also download these as a Word document.
· When you think of ethics in linguistics, what comes to mind?
· Where do you think ethics would be important within your degree?
· When do you think it would be most beneficial to learn about ethics? (Think about whether it’s better to learn this very early on in the course or only when it's relevant).
· Why do you think it’s important to make ethical considerations and to remove biases from your work?
· Did you feel welcomed in Newcastle and in your degree? Did you feel a sense of community? (Aimed more towards PARTNERS & International students).
· Did you find it easy to get along with other students? (Aimed more towards PARTNERS & International students).
· Did you settle into Newcastle and your degree programme okay? (Aimed more towards PARTNERS & International students).
· Do you think there is enough inclusivity in your degree?
· What does inclusivity mean to you in relation to your degree programme?
· Tell me about your experience with doing research and writing academic essays at undergraduate level.
· Tell me about your experience with reading academic articles.
· How did you find referencing in your essays? (i.e., easy, or difficult)
· How does writing essays at undergraduate level compare with writing essays at A Level / High School?
· What did you find difficult about writing essays at university? (if anything) – how could this be helped?
· What do you think would help make you feel more prepared to write undergraduate essays?
· Do you think it would be useful if there were extra-curricular classes on academic research & writing skills?
· What are your expectations for writing an essay, having not written one? Or doing assignments in general?
· What did you expect going into a linguistics / linguistics-related degree?
· What kind of assessments did you expect to have to complete for a linguistics / linguistics-related degree?
· How prepared did you feel you were for a linguistics / linguistics-related degree?
· How difficult did you find the transition from A Level / High School to undergraduate linguistics? How could the transition be made easier?
· Has there been anything that has surprised you about your degree so far?
· For English Language (Q302) students: Did you expect to have to take modules from outside the School of English Language, Literature & Linguistics.
· How do you think your experience is different from students on other degrees? Consider how different the experience is for students who do combined degrees, i.e., pure linguistics students (1 school) vs. linguistic and modern language students (2 schools).
· What did you expect from university lectures and seminars? Did your experience differ from your expectations?
· What did you expect from university in terms of social life? Did your experience differ from your expectations?
· Do you know what support is available to you? If you do, how did you find this out?
· Do you know how to access this support should you need it?
· Is there anything that you know now that you wish you had known when you started/before you started?
